Forthcoming Leonardo Electronic Almanac, MIT Press. Available online This paper explores how both pervasive computing and locative media are becoming technologies and processes that increasingly reshape and reformulate how people understand and experience space and culture. It poses some questions of this impact, for example on locative media representations of urban mobilities, and investigates, through the lens of archaeology, the issues that surround the mapping of people and things in time and space. The article deals with authorship and ownership and its significance to locative media, concluding with several suggested questions to be considered in future research and design in the field of locative media. posted by Ganaele on the EMU blog on 04/06/2006 • The Headmap Manifesto "a sequence of text fragments dealing with the social and cultural implications of location aware devices." One of the major criticisms on locative media art is its reliance on GPS technology, and some critics feel this technological dimension only serves to perputate imperialistic ideology. Brian Holmes has been vocal about this, particulatly in this essay (in which Varnelis and Tuters are made reference to). posted by Janice on the EMU blog 03/14/2006 • LocaLocative Discussion This is a Multi-disciplinary focus discussion on locative media that includes participants such as Anne Galloway, Simon Pope, and Elizabeth Goodman.
