Palpable City

Palpable City, created by Erik Conrad, is a “location aware garment? that, when worn, allows its wearer to become aware of the city’s spatial form through vibrations. Information such as time, light, temperature, and humidity are computed through a GPS device and relayed to the wearer tactilely. Umbrella uses Wi-Fi technology to Retrieve Forecast Predictions

Gizmodo describes a new gadget, a Forecast Predicting Umbrella. Its handle glows with greater degrees of intensity as the likelihood of rain increases. This is of interest because it uses wifi to retrieve the weather information.

Locative Media as Socialising and Spatialising Practices: Learning from Archaeology (DRAFT)

Galloway, Anne and Matthew Ward. 2005. “Locative Media as Socialising and Spatialising Practices: Learning from Archaeology (DRAFT)?. Forthcoming Leonardo Electronic Almanac, MIT Press. Available online

This paper explores how both pervasive computing and locative media are becoming technologies and processes that increasingly reshape and reformulate how people understand and experience space and culture. It poses some questions of this impact, for example on locative media representations of urban mobilities, and investigates, through the lens of archaeology, the issues that surround the mapping of people and things in time and space. The article deals with authorship and ownership and its significance to locative media, concluding with several suggested questions to be considered in future research and design in the field of locative media.

Beyond Locative Media

I came across this article and it provides a pretty comprehensive history (i didn't know that locative media came about as a response to the net art movement!), along with criticism towards locative media as an art form.

One of the major criticisms on locative media art is its reliance on GPS technology, and some critics feel this technological dimension only serves to perputate imperialistic ideology. Brian Holmes has been vocal about this, particulatly in this essay (in which Varnelis and Tuters are made reference to).
